This episode discusses our experience following the Prosthetics Event 2024 in Coventry.
We mention our highlights, including networking, speaking to hundreds of people with our presentations, and a series of insightful discussions, which we hope you will find very helpful if you are a rubber monster freak like us.
We chatted with Adrian Rigby, known for his exceptional bald cap techniques. He shared his methods and discussed common challenges in creating realistic bald caps. Bald cap makeup remains a basic skill that tests all makeup artists’ abilities, so include one in your folio!

The conversation emphasises the importance of adapting to new technologies and continually innovating. While technology has evolved, the basic principles of mould-making remain vital, so you should download the free notes we made for it.
We try to capture the essence of these artists’ passion and enthusiasm for their craft and the importance of sharing knowledge and pushing the field’s boundaries.

Our talk, Mould Making for Those Afraid of Making Moulds, was a blast. We recorded our chat and will release it as an audio podcast soon. In it, we address the thorny issue of learning how to make moulds. It is fair to say people play around and dabble with sculpting, drawing and designing things for fun. However, most don’t play equally as easily with mould-making.
A drawing doesnโt cost much, if anything, other than time, and it certainly doesnโt make a mess or destroy something else in the process. But moulds can. Because of this, folks donโt dabble with moulds. Itโs all in or nothing.
If you do something a lot, you tend to get better at it. If you avoid something like the plague, chances are you donโt get better at that thing at all. Thatโs where this little course of ours comes in. We put together a simple exercise which we encourage you to try if you are unfamiliar with moulds but want to make moulds. We gave it away at the show, and it is included below for you now!
Click here or the image below to download the 19 pages of free workshop notes which covers the mould making exercise.
Use this as a guide; follow along and make your moulds of a simple ball. Do each step as well as you can, just using clay and plaster. We chose these simple materials because they are inexpensive and easy to find.
Chances are, it will go wrong. Youโll make mistakes. Do it anyway. You have our permission to fail. We think youโll thank us for it eventually.
After youโve done it, you will understand a LOT of what mould-making is about, what to focus on, and how to overcome the most common problems. It’s all done on something that doesnโt matter.
The pressure is off. Make your mistakes. MAKE MISTAKES! Document your efforts and post them for all to see. Imagine that! An army of mould makers all sharing their moulds of simple things. Use the hashtag #mouldmonkeys and tag us. NO FEAR!
Thanks as always for your kind attention. Stay frosty!
